3 Top E-Commerce Tips for 2019

We say it every year, but now it’s time to say it again…where did the last year go? It feels like just yesterday the online retail community was speculating about when Amazon would launch to Australia, and now we’re heading to Christmas 2018 already (and almost a year of Amazon!). So, what can we learn from the last year and what do you need to consider for the next one.

  1. Marketplaces

It’s no wonder that this is the top of our list when it comes to 2019 must-haves. 2017 was the launch of Amazon and Catch, 2018 saw the launch of Prime and FBA, eBay Guaranteed Delivery and eBay Plus. 2019 will see consumers shift their shopping habits as marketplaces penetrate even further. If marketplaces weren’t part of your strategy in 2018, don’t let another year go by without getting on board. Leverage marketplaces for maximum impact and do it strategically.

  1. Go Global

If you haven’t considered cross border trade (CBT) it’s time to make this part of your strategy. According to Forrester Research, by 2022 cross-border shopping will make up 20 percent of all e-commerce—with sales forecast to reach $630 billion. Take small steps initially and test the waters in new locations. Consider a marketplace like CatchOfTheDay.co.nz, Trade Me, Tmall or Lazada and don’t forget that many marketplace offer comprehensive overseas fulfilment programs designed to help you get started in new locales, such as Fulfilment by Amazon or eBay’s Global Shipping Program.

  1. Deliver

Eighty-five percent of Australians expect their online goods to be delivered in three days and 83% percent expect retailers to have a same-day option, yet only about 30% of Australian retailers actually offer this. Amazon Prime and eBay Guaranteed Delivery have spent the last year shaping consumer expectations of what is possible (free and fast delivery within two days) which means the bar has been raised for 2019! Make sure your own internal fulfilment processes are tight, that you offer appealing delivery timelines and pricing, and look into outsourcing where it makes sense through things like Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA).
